Event description
Kakuma Digi-Connect aimed to bring together refugee and host community led organizations and companies to design a work-plan and best practice in talent development and creating decent work for local communities in Kakuma. The event sessions were moderated by MC Ting Ting and Ali Suleiman. Some of the organizations represented included WUSC Kenya, International Trade Centre and FilmAid Kenya.

Challenges
As the discussion proceeded below were the difficulties highlighted that affected the stakeholders when offering digital interventions to Kakuma communities.
- Lack of networking platforms.
- Slow documentation policies.
- Dropping out of students.
- Competition rather than collaborating.
- Misinformation on registration and starting of the company.
- Few numbers of trained facilitators and trainers in the organization.
- Inadequate funds, grants and donors to support the initiatives.
- Lack of certificates recognition by the education institutions of one’s country.
Practical Solutions
The following was proposed to elevate employability among the Kakuma communities in the digital space:
- Empowering the children with ICT basic skills.
- Empowerment of local artists, artisans, fashion designers, content creators and photographers by training them on online digital marketing.
- Helping local business owners sell their products online.
- Sharing of job opportunities with the locals.
- Creating awareness of the work RLOs, CBOs, and Media Houses offer to the local communities.
- Offering of the digital marketing courses and festivals ceremonies.
- Installation of network to the business centers and homes.
- Educating on use of technologies and uses of online platforms.
- Implementing sustainable markets approaches training.
- Provision of mentorship and guidance.
- Partnership with private sector and other stakeholders.
- Linking and helping CBOs and RLOs for registration.
- Promoting Filmmaking and music productions in bigger platforms.
Conclusion
Mr. Bulambo, Director at Kakuwood Media House, emphasized ’We need more of such events where we come together to share our ideas and solve our challenges collaboratively as we network, this is one way on how we can do things better!’’
Kakuma Digi-Connect came to an end, but IConnectKenya has a clear vision of what is needed and the ability to double collective efforts on ways forward in expanding the digital market, creating more opportunities for partners networking forums and sharing available opportunities.
