Event description
This event was guided by this year’s Migration Summit theme “Unlocking and Engaging Talent: Pathways to Decent Work” and was part of the 4th Leadership Meeting hosted by USCRI Mexico. Attended by approximately 35 participants, including Mexican and refugee students, graduates from Venezuela, Honduras, Colombia, Nicaragua, South Sudan, and USCRI Mexico team members, the summit aimed to address refugee and migrant labor integration.
Session 1: Round Table
The opening session introduced the Migration Summit’s theme of employment integration for
refugees and migrants. A dynamic round table, led by students, encouraged sharing
experiences and perspectives. Key questions addressed included:
- Motivation for choosing work modes (personal affinity, training, or viability).
- Information needed before entering the work market.
- Major challenges faced in job searches.
- Value added by foreigners/refugees to employers.
The session concluded with a Q&A and community recommendations. Participants, divided
into five groups to identify issues and proposed solutions such as awareness raising, adoption of standards, more workshops and training, refugee centers, among others.
Session 2: Strategies for Creating Resumes and Reflecting on Career Objectives
The Rules of the Game
- Emphasized understanding job market rules and personal aspirations
- Key elements: discipline, punctuality, participation, asking for help, and enthusiasm.
- Example: A student’s transition from bakery production to pastry chef highlighted perseverance and focus.
Using National Employment Service Tools
- Focused on available resources such as job opportunities, job fairs, workshops, and employment portals.
Rediscovering Skills and Talents
- Importance of attitude in job searching and skills development. Key factors: adaptability, perseverance, initiative, and self-esteem.
Resume Tips
- Suggested using appropriate templates, a formal email, tailored resumes, and strategic information distribution.
The session with Mario Ruvulcaba provided students with valuable insights into effective
resume writing and career objective reflection, highlighting the importance of understanding
the key rules of the job search and entrepreneurial landscape, maintaining a positive
attitude, and leveraging available resources for success.
